Walls and ceilings in most modern homes are covered with gypsum wallboard, commonly called drywall. Over time, people attach things to the walls and remove or move them around, leaving holes behind. Accidents will happen, too, and the drywall can be damaged. This might be from water leakage, or some object (like a doorknob) knocking a hole in the wall.
